Get a QuoteEvery surface in the room, not just the walls.
Interior decorating means walls, ceilings, woodwork and trim treated as one job. Skirting, architraves, door frames, doors, window reveals, picture rails and built-in joinery all need different preparation and often a different product from the walls around them, and a room only looks finished when they agree with each other.
We also hang wallpaper, from plain linings through to patterned and heavier contract papers. Where a wall is going to carry a feature paper, the lining and preparation underneath it matter more than the paper itself.
Most of our interior work is in occupied homes and working premises, so the job is planned around you rather than the other way round.
The part you never see is the part that lasts.
The difference between a decorated room that still looks right in five years and one that does not is almost entirely preparation. Filling and caulking, sanding back, spot-priming bare or repaired areas, sealing new plaster with a thinned mist coat, and de-glossing existing paintwork so the new system has something to key into.
Cracks at wall-to-ceiling junctions and around trim are raked out and filled flexibly rather than skimmed over, because a rigid filler in a moving joint simply reopens over the first heating season.
Existing surfaces get checked for the problems that will otherwise come back through a new finish: damp, flaking distemper, nicotine and water staining, and previous coatings that are failing underneath. These are dealt with before any finish paint goes on, not papered over.
Choosing a finish that suits the room and the traffic.
Ceilings, walls and woodwork each want a different product. Matt and flat finishes hide imperfection on large wall areas and suit living rooms and bedrooms. Harder-wearing washable finishes earn their place in kitchens, hallways, stairwells and anywhere with children or pets. Woodwork and trim take an eggshell, satin or gloss depending on the look you want and how much handling it gets.
Water-based trim paints have improved enormously and stay white far longer than traditional oil-based gloss, which ambers over time. Where a client prefers the flow and depth of an oil finish, we will say so honestly and apply it properly.
Colour behaves differently under north light than south light, and differently again under warm artificial light in the evening. We will always encourage trying a colour on the actual wall before committing a whole room to it.
Dust, protection and getting the room back.
Floors and furniture are covered, sanding is done with dust extraction where the work allows, and the room is left usable at the end of each day wherever that is possible. Fixtures are removed and refitted rather than cut around.
Drying and recoat times set the pace of a decorating job more than anything else, and they stretch in cold or humid weather. We would rather give you a realistic sequence than rush a second coat onto a first that has not properly hardened.
Exterior work follows a different set of rules again — see exterior painting. If the job includes floors, wooden flooring and sanding is usually best done before the final coat of trim paint.

Questions we are asked about this work.
Can you decorate while we are living here?
Yes, most of our interior work is in occupied homes. Floors and furniture are covered, sanding is done with dust extraction where the work allows, and rooms are left usable at the end of each day wherever that is possible.
Do you move furniture and take fixtures off?
Fixtures are removed and refitted rather than cut around, which is what makes the difference on skirting, switches and radiators. Furniture is moved and protected as part of the job.
Should trim be water-based or oil?
Water-based trim paints have improved a great deal and stay white far longer, where traditional oil gloss ambers over time. If you prefer the flow and depth of an oil finish we will say so honestly and apply it properly.
How long does a room take?
Drying and recoat times set the pace more than anything else, and they stretch in cold or humid weather. We would rather give you a realistic sequence than rush a second coat onto a first that has not hardened.
Do you hang wallpaper?
Yes, from plain linings through to patterned and heavier contract papers. Where a wall is taking a feature paper, the lining and preparation underneath matter more than the paper itself.
