Big houses, big elevations.

Harpenden has a high proportion of large Edwardian, Arts-and-Crafts influenced and inter-war detached houses. These bring generous elevations, deep eaves, substantial timber detail and often render or part-render above brick.

That combination means an exterior scheme here is rarely a one-product job. Render, brick, bargeboards, soffits, sash or casement windows and porch joinery each need their own preparation and their own coating.

Interiors in these houses tend to have more woodwork than a modern home — picture rails, deep skirtings, panelled doors and staircases — and that woodwork is usually what sets the standard the walls are judged against.

Scaffold is the expensive part, so use it once.

On a large detached house the access is often a significant share of the exterior cost. It pays to plan everything that needs the scaffold into one visit: facade coating, all the timber, the roofline, gutter clearing and any repointing.

If the roofline needs attention at the same time, that is covered under fascias, soffits and guttering.

We will say honestly when an elevation does not need doing yet. Repainting a sound breathable facade early does not extend its life.

Interior and exterior across the town.

Full interior decorating including wallpapering is covered under interior painting, and exterior and masonry work under exterior painting, including StoColor Dryonic where a facade would benefit from it.

Original and engineered floors are covered under wooden flooring, and bathrooms, kitchens and wet rooms under tiling.

We also take on wallpapering · heat-reflective coating · whiteboard walls.

What actually moves an estimate in Harpenden.

On the larger Harpenden houses, access is usually the dominant cost. Scaffold or tower hire is charged by the week regardless of how much painting happens in that week, which is why it pays to plan every job needing that access into one visit.

Surface area is less predictable than people expect. Deep eaves, bargeboards, porch joinery, bay windows and substantial exterior timber add far more hours than the flat wall area suggests.

Condition matters as much as size. Sound timber needs preparation and coating; timber with decay in the end grain or bottom rails needs cutting out and splicing before anything else happens.

Questions we are asked locally.

Do you handle the scaffolding on larger houses?

Yes, access is arranged as part of the job. Because scaffold or tower hire is charged by the week, we plan everything that needs that access into one visit — facade, timber, roofline, gutters and any repointing.

Can you do the exterior and the roofline at the same time?

That is usually the sensible order, because the access is already in place. Fascias, soffits and guttering are covered on our fascias and soffits page.

How long does a full exterior take on a large detached house?

It depends far more on condition and weather than on size. Coatings need surface temperature and humidity inside the manufacturer's window to form a proper film, which is why we give a realistic sequence rather than a fixed promise, and why exterior schemes are normally best started between late spring and early autumn.

Do you do interiors as well?

Yes, including wallpapering. Period interiors tend to have more woodwork than modern homes, and that woodwork usually sets the standard the whole room is judged against.
