Scallop Feature Wall
A bronze metallic scallop paper, hung to a laser line because the pattern allows no drift.
Get a QuoteA geometric metallic is the hardest paper to hang.
A scallop pattern is a strict geometric repeat, and the paper here is metallic bronze. That combination is about as demanding as wallpapering gets: the repeat must align exactly across every drop, and the metallic surface reflects light along the joins, so any step or overlap is picked out rather than hidden.
With a pattern like this there is no forgiving direction. Drift of a millimetre or two per drop is invisible on the first join and obvious by the fifth.
Laser line, and preparation underneath.
The drops were set out and hung to a laser level rather than to the wall, because almost no wall is truly plumb and following it would walk the pattern off true across the room.
The wall beneath was made good and lined so the paper took evenly. A metallic paper telegraphs every imperfection in the surface under it once light rakes across the wall, so the preparation matters more here than under a matt paper.
Pattern true, joins invisible.
The finished wall, the close-up detail and the installation shots are below. The measure of this kind of work is that you see the pattern and the shimmer, and not where one drop meets the next.
Judging a geometric or metallic paper.
A strict repeat in a reflective finish is the least forgiving wallcovering there is, and the tells are specific.
Ask what the first drop is hung to. It should be a plumb line or a laser, never the wall. Almost no wall is truly vertical, and following it walks the pattern off true across the room.
Look along the seams with the light behind you, then in front. A metallic surface reflects along the joins, so any step or overlap is picked out rather than hidden.
Check the repeat at the fifth or sixth drop, not the first. Drift of a millimetre per drop is invisible at the first join and obvious further along the wall.
Ask about the wall underneath. A metallic paper telegraphs every imperfection in the surface beneath it, so preparation matters more here than under a matt paper.
