Walls and floors, in the rooms that punish them most.

Bathrooms, shower enclosures, wet rooms, kitchen walls and splashbacks, utility rooms and tiled floors. These are the rooms where water, heat and movement all act on the same surface, which is why tiling failures are so rarely about the tile itself.

We work in large-format porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and mosaic, including feature walls and patterned layouts where the setting out has to be planned before the first tile goes up.

What goes on behind the tile decides how long it lasts.

Tiles are only as sound as what they are fixed to. Walls and floors are checked for flatness and movement first, because large-format tiles are unforgiving of a substrate that is out of true and will either lip at the joints or crack later.

In showers and wet rooms the substrate is tanked — a continuous waterproof membrane taken up the walls and across the floor, sealed at corners and around pipe penetrations. Grout is not waterproof, and a wet room relies on the membrane behind the tile rather than the tile itself.

Floors with any deflection get an uncoupling layer or overboarding, so that normal movement in the structure is not transmitted straight into the tile bed.

Where the cuts fall is a decision, not an accident.

Setting out is the difference between a tiled room that looks considered and one that does not. Full tiles land where the eye goes first, cuts are balanced on both sides rather than leaving a sliver in one corner, and the grid is planned around the shower niche, the window reveal and the sanitaryware before anything is fixed.

Large-format tiles need careful planning of lippage and often a levelling system during fixing. Natural stone needs sealing before grouting, or the grout stains the face of the stone permanently.

The detail that dates a bathroom fastest.

Grout colour changes the look of a tiled wall as much as the tile does: matching grout makes a surface read as one plane, contrasting grout emphasises the grid. Epoxy grouts resist staining and are worth considering on floors and in heavily used showers.

Movement joints at internal corners and around the perimeter are silicone rather than grout, because those junctions move and rigid grout cracks there first. Trims and edge profiles are chosen to suit the tile thickness.

If the room is being redecorated around the tiling, see interior painting.

Questions we are asked about this work.

Do you waterproof wet rooms?

Yes. In showers and wet rooms the substrate is tanked with a continuous waterproof membrane taken up the walls and across the floor, sealed at corners and around pipe penetrations. Grout is not waterproof, so a wet room relies on the membrane behind the tile rather than the tile itself.

What does large-format porcelain need?

A flat substrate. Large tiles are unforgiving of a surface out of true and will either lip at the joints or crack later, so walls and floors are checked for flatness and movement before anything is fixed, and a levelling system is used during fixing.

Does natural stone need sealing?

Yes, and before grouting. Seal it afterwards and the grout stains the face of the stone permanently.

Why are corners silicone rather than grout?

Internal corners and the perimeter move, and rigid grout cracks there first. Those junctions are silicone, with trims and edge profiles chosen to suit the tile thickness.

Does grout colour matter?

It changes the look as much as the tile does. Matching grout makes a wall read as one plane and contrasting grout emphasises the grid. Epoxy grouts resist staining and are worth considering on floors and in heavily used showers.
